Description

THURSDAYS, 01/14 & 01/21

2:00 - 4:30 PM EST

(11 AM PST, 7 PM GMT)

For the past 15 years, our online identity has exponentially taken up more and more space in our efforts, our time, and our energy. Now in 2020, it is to the point that it feels difficult for many of us to find, and remember, the real value and presence in an experience if we are not sharing it in our virtual “world” in some way. But that virtually constructed world is getting more codified by the day, and the definition of what qualifies as “good content” (ie. the things our fellow humans will give their attention to) is getting narrower and narrower. How do we resist the acculturation of our creativity and self, driven by the “content” we feel bound to make, and also consume ourselves?

What if no one was looking?

What if you were living and creating for yourself?

What if the words you wrote were more about painting a picture of your inner landscape than explaining your process?

What if you didn’t need others to understand?

What if you didn’t need to be inspirational?

In this two-part workshop series, we will explore ourselves beyond what we present to the world.

The human experience cannot be explained. It cannot be contained neatly in pretty videos and wise captions. It’s made of sensation, of perceptions that by definition elude the cognitive. The only way to share who we are as humans, to allow someone else to experience our world, is through imagery and sensations. In order to do that, we ourselves need to change the filter we put on what we create, and to really let go of the desire to please, inspire, entertain or be validated.

Mining genuine creative impulse from dreams, memories, sensations, family lore, poetry and more, we will work with the creative mediums of language, writing, movement, and dance to unearth a different path to translating yourself to the world. This progressive process will seek to divert from what’s “acceptable content” towards what really expresses and captures our perception, our experience of life.

Filming and observing your movement will be discouraged.

THE WORDS THAT MOVE US W/ LAURE PORCHÉ AND TRACEE KAFER

You might have heard the phrase “Use your words” when you were younger… But do you know which words are YOUR words?

What is the language of your essence? Which words speak to your soul, your body, your senses, your imagination? Do you use them to propel yourself through difficulty, support your life or process your blind spots?

This session aims to explore your unique relationship to words and language, and guide you to start telling stories in your own tongue, both verbally and physically. We will explore our private glossary and start consciously putting it together to allow the deeper layers of ourselves to emerge.

Inner Movement Sessions: In this day and era, slowing down and inner work are not just nicety “self-care” trends, they are becoming necessity. The speed in which things move, evolve, and change activates us in a way that calls for more consistent efforts for regulation and integration. Our mind-body-emotional systems need care, attention, and processes that support better functioning and greater capacity.

Exploring/expressive spaces, growing in popularity because of evolving communities of practice, primarily utilize dance as the main vehicle. This doingness, while also beneficial and important, struggles to model and provide full permission and opportunity to do less, “be”, find slowness, stillness, introspection and rest; components proven to initiate deeper awareness, coherence, and vitality.

This new INNER MOVEMENT series covers the rituals, self-development work, mindbodyfulness, and curious inquiry that can be hard to habituate on your own. These sessions can hold you gently accountable for showing up for yourself, and cultivating connection with others. Instead of being required to structure and vary the practice, you can just show up and be in it.

These sessions blend seamlessly with freestyle practice, but invite in minimal “external” focused movement to maximize what gets missed or skipped over too quickly in dance environments. Sessions are curated with sensitivity to the cycles of time, seasons, and collective resonance. You may be guided into meditation, somatic and embodied practice, journaling, self-inquiry, and unique processes. As always with FYF, you are given permission to work in a way that feels best for you.

Class links and session tips will be sent within 24 hours of session start via your registered email. Please take note of your time zone!

Requirements: Classes are held via video conference, so you will need a good wifi connection, and a laptop/desktop/tablet to stream the class. You will also need a music setup with a secondary device (like a phone) running Spotify.

Cancellation Policy: Unfortunately, no refunds can be offered for online classes (although you can transfer your spot to a friend!). In the case of medical issues, a class credit can be applied to a future date.

Reschedule Policy: You are eligible to transfer your class credit to another class happening in the next 60 days *with one week’s notice*. Send an email to findingyourfreestyle@gmail.com no later then 7 days before the originally registered class so that your spot can be offered to another person. Your class credit will be good for 60 days, and you can send an email with which class you want to move to at any time.

If you need to cancel a class *up to 24 hours in advance* the week of class, you won’t retain your class credit to reschedule, but you will get a 25% promo code for your next class as a thank you for canceling with notice.

When Class is Canceled: If an upcoming class has 2 students or less 24 hours before the class is scheduled to begin, we will likely cancel/postpone session and select a new date - in which case you would be open to enroll in the next available class that works with your schedule (this class credit will not expire), or receive a refund.
